City council was unanimous at last night’s budget meeting approving a freeze on the salary and car allowance for the mayor and city council recognizing the hardship in the community.  The freeze is effective for the 2016 and 2017 calendar years.  Low oil and steel dumping has hit our community hard with hundreds of layoffs.  Ward 3 city councillor Matthew Shoemaker was behind the resolution along with councillor Paul Christian and down the road he believes council can go a step further…

Shoemaker says it’s important that council take last night’s initial step considering city departments and agencies have been asked to look hard at their budgets with an eye to reduce spending and realign services.  He adds there is also another proposal on the table calling for a non-union wage freeze of city staff.
