The girls curling team from École secondaire catholique Jeunesse-Nord in Blind River competed in the North Shore Secondary School (NSSSA) Curling Championship held at the Espanola Curling Club on January 18 and 19. The Jeunesse-Nord curlers played with passion and displayed great skills as they won their four games thus claiming the Championship banner as well as the gold medal for the third year in a row.

With this success, the girls curling squad from Jeunesse-Nord qualifies for the third year in a row to compete at the Northern Ontario Secondary School (NOSSA) Curling Championship to be held in Sudbury on March 2 and 3. Last year, Jeunesse-Nord stood tall at NOSSA and earned the right to represent Northern Ontario at the Provincial Curling Championship (OFSAA). The quality of the 2016 team was reflected by the great success of their former skip, Hayley Horton, who now plays on the Waterloo University Varsity team.

The Jeunesse-Nord curlers hope to repeat last year’s success and qualify for the OFSAA Championship. Prior to last year’s participation, a Jeunesse-Nord curling team had not qualified for OFSAA in more than 25 years.

The sport of curling is quite popular in Blind River. The community, the members of the Blind River Curling Club support the youth starting at a very young age. The majority of Jeunesse-Nord students who curl were initiated to curling through the LITTLE ROCKERS Program at a young age. The success of our students was made possible through the dedication of present and past coaches.
