Eleven teams competed in the day long High School Curling Championships at the Community First Curling Centre on Saturday.

In the boys division final, Team Lemieux of St. Mary’s claimed the Boys City Curling Championship with a 7-4 victory over Team Soulliere from White Pines. The St. Mary’s team is made up of skip Nick Lemieux, vice Jacob Reid, second Andrew Berg, and lead Taylor Longo.  St. Mary’s got out to an early 5 point lead with three in the first end and steals of a single in the second and third.  White Pines staged a comeback with a single in the fourth and steals in the fifth and sixth.  Skip Nick Lemieux threw a clutch soft weight hit in the seventh to take two and would run White Pines out of rocks in the final end for the win.

White Pines is skipped by Aaron Soulliere with Bryson Petingalo, Nicole Costello and Logan Sylvestre.  Earlier in the day in the semi-finals they defeated the other St. Mary’s team skipped by Rico Palarchio by a score of 7-6.  That game saw Palarchio through a tricky draw to tie the game and force an extra end. Soulliere returned with his own difficult draw for one with his final rock of the extra end for the win.

Both St. Mary’s and White Pines will compete at NOSSA being held in Sudbury on March 2-3.

In the girls division, Team McLean of Superior Heights claimed the Girls City Curling Championship.  The team is skipped by Erin McLean with Catherine Mesich, Breanne Hamilton, and Madelaine Coutu.

Superior Heights won the first two games in the best of three play-off series against Korah. In the second game Korah, skipped by Jenna Nicholson, vice Abbey Engel, second Caitlyn Overland and lead Britney Poliquin, opened the scoring with one in the first end, gave up three in the second and took one more in the third.  Superior Heights came back with a big end of six in the fourth and a steal in the fifth to go on and seal the victory. Both girls teams will advance to NOSSA.

Team Barrette from Notre-Dame-du-Sault claimed the consolation trophy with a win over Team Hales  of Superior Heights.  Superior Heights opened the scoring with two in the first end and Notre-Dame-du-Sault with skip Jonathan Barrett, Fiorenzo Mazzarelli, Aiden Lawrence, and Jean-Chrisopher Mazzarelli responded with their own two and a big steal of 3 in third.  The teams went on to trade singles for four ends before NDS ran Superior Heights out of rocks in the eighth end for a 7-4 win.
