The latest census numbers provides a picture of the makeup of Sault Ste. Marie’s Housing market and its affordability.
There are over 32-thousand private households in the city with about two-thirds of them owned and a third rented.
Of that number, 740 of them are condominiums.
54% of households have a mortgage and the percentage of households spending 30% or more of income on shelter costs comes in at 10.3%.
The average value of dwellings comes in at over 235-thousand dollars—-just a little more than half the national average.
The average monthly shelter costs for rented dwellings is $786.

Census Data released yesterday also shows the makeup of the Sault based on ethnicity.
More than one out of 10 Saultites identify themselves as Aboriginal at 12.7% or 92-hundred out of a total population of almost 72-thousand.
Almost one in three identify themselves as of English origin or 28% of the population with French next at 23.8%.
Those of Italian origin rank 4th overall with over 15-thousand—the Irish finished slightly ahead.
