In comparing census numbers from 2016 to 2011, the percentage of full-time jobs that make up all the jobs available in Sault Ste. Marie has dropped significantly.
That from local researcher Jonathan Coulman—the executive director of the Algoma Workforce Investment Corporation…

Coulman says part-time, casual along with contract positions in that five year period has grown from 25% to 50% of the total workforce.
Those contract positions are for less than one year.
He adds that trend is reflected in the Sault’s top employment sectors in healthcare and social services, accommodation and food services, retail and manufacturing.
Looking ahead in the immediate future, he will be looking at the impacts the minimum wage will have on our local job market and the continuing impacts of an aging workforce.

We ended the year with an unemployment rate below 5% for a second straight month and a participation rate at 55%.
