It’s being recommended that the City of Sault Ste. Marie not completely privatize waste collection.
In a report for council for tonight’s meeting, it’s recommended that the City maintain a hybrid model which involves a 50-50 split in service involving both a selected contractor and city workers.
Council had asked city staff to carry out a tendering process for the service asking potential firms to submit bids that cost out both a 50% share of collection and the full 100% share.
Staff explains that the cost difference between both options would be just over 12-thousand dollars when you factor in having the City continue to provide 100% of the leaf and yard collection as well.
Staff further suggests that maintaining city involvment in collection encourages better pricing from the private sector now and in the future.
It is also recommended that the next contract be awarded to Green for Life.
