As of Monday, the Sault Locks will be shutdown and a number of maintenance projects will be carried out on the two operating locks.
Part of the maintenance work includes replacing aging gate pieces on the largest of the locks at a cost of about 2.4-million dollars.
The US Army Corpos of Engineers says each year around 80-million tons of cargo passes through the Locks system involving more than 45-hundred ships.
The Locks are scheduled to reopen on March 26th.
