Sault Ste. Marie was hit with a record 34 centimetres of snowfall yesterday as Saultites dealt with the first major snowfall of the season.
The previous record was 21 centimetres which Environment Canada reports occurred in 1967.

In the aftermath of yesterday’s extreme snowfall, school bus transporations is once again being cancelled for all Boards in the Sault Ste. Marie and Central Algoma areas and the Goulais River areas north of the Sault.
It’s being done to cooperate with municipalities to allow for proper clearing for roadways and sidewalks.
Public works crews were out in full force yesterday and overnight as most roads are plowed this morning. The secondary residential areas were done overnight.
Lake Superior State University’s main Sault Ste. Marie campus closed yesterday afternoon and will be closed for today as maintenance crews will need the day to clear the snow on campus.
Both Sault College and Algoma University cancelled classes last evening and are reopening today.
There was an hour long power outage in the east end of the city during the winter storm that impacted around 8-thousand Sault PUC customers.
The City of Sault Ste. Marie says garbage collection and recycling scheduled for today is being cancelled. Next Tuesday’s collection will allow for a 4 bag limit for those routes.

Over in Michigan, Sault Tribe offices will be on a 2 hour delay today to ensure parking lots are clear.
