City council will be asked at tonight’s meeting to approve a transit pass partnership agreement with the Sault Ste. Marie District Social Services Administration Board.
The agreement would see the two sides enter into a 11-month pilot for a flat fee for service for all individuals in receipt of Social Assistance.
It would begin next month and carry through til the end of the year.
The District Social Services Administration Board would provide the City with 450-thousand dollars to cover the 11-month period and the city would provide passes to social services to administer.
Under the current system, a Social Services case manager approves the issuance or denial of a monthly pass based on provincial and local policy and there is no guarantee that funding issued for a transit pass are being used for the intended purposes.
Also under the current system, Social Services provides the City with approximately 500-thousand dollars annually for transit passes based on a 5-year average.
