Staff with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry will carrying out a survey of the province’s black bear population over the next few months.
The Ministry is conducting barbed-wire hair trap surveys in several parts of Ontario and Adriana Pacitto with the regional northeast division says the survey will take place from approximately May 13th to July 5th.
She estimates the current black bear population in Ontario…

Pacitto talks about the survey itself specifically for our immediate area…

Staff will attract bears to the survey stations with sardines where the bears will have to rub up against some barbed wire to get to the fish.
As they rub up against the wire they leave behind a small hair sample that can be sent to a lab for DNA analysis.
