MP Terry Sheehan says we don’t need to sacrifice the economy to fight climate change.
The federal government has announced their plan to grow the economy and fight climate change by approving and building the Trans-Mountain Pipeline Expansion. This project will get Canadian oil to new markets while creating high-paying jobs across the country.
The TMX will also accelerate investments into green energy. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that every dollar made by the federal government from TMX will be put right back into clean energy projects, creating green jobs and protecting the environment. That’s an estimated $500 million dedicated every year to fighting climate change.
“TMX is so important for the Sault because Tenaris manufactures steel pipes for energy development, and more demand for Sault-made products means job creation for our community. Not to mention pipelines are absolutely the safest way to transport oil anywhere,” Terry said, “and as the alternative energy capital of the world, the Sault will benefit big time from green energy investments. On the economy, the environment, and the Sault, TMX is a win-win-win.”
David McHattie, Vice President Institutional Relations Canada at Tenaris, echoed Terry’s point, saying “Tenaris commends the Federal Government’s approval of the TMX pipeline. This is good for Canadian manufacturers like Tenaris that are committed to support the safe development of Canadian energy resources.”
Cody Alexander, President of United Steelworkers 9548, also had high praise for the federal government’s decision on TMX, noting, “our Executive most definitely appreciates the forward-looking plans of Prime Minister Trudeau and his government. Increasing Canadians’ ability to access global markets is the job of the government, and in the case of the TMX file, they get a Gold Star. Our main hope is that with this pipeline approval, in conjunction with the lifting of the U.S. 232 tariffs, we will see an increase in our pipe orders, which will result in our 200 laid-off workers being recalled. These laid-off workers are suffering, and they needed this good news” said Mr. Alexander.
Terry noted that TMX is moving forward because the federal government has made good on its duty to consult with Indigenous communities, and to consider the pipeline’s environmental impacts.

“We have spent the last four years doing more for our environment than any other government in Canadian history, and we’ll stay this course. For 10 years Harper’s Conservatives ignored Indigenous, environmental, and legal concerns, failing to get any pipelines built to new markets. Scheer would be more of the same. By moving forward with TMX, we’re creating jobs, finding new markets, and investing in clean energy using sustainable government revenues,” Terry said.
