A local group of 4 indigenous organizations including Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services is behind a proposed major development for the City’s Gateway Site on the waterfront.
The proposed development involves 120 units of mixed housing including some geared to income with commercial components for the 13 acre site at an estimated cost of 40-million dollars with the potential for additional expansion.
City council will be asked at Monday’s meeting to enter into a memorandum of understanding with the group subject to finalizing details for the transfer of the land.
Those details would take into consideration the current appraised value of the property.
Mayor Christian Provenzano says there is also the issue of the environmental condition of the property and the associated costs to clean it up…

The City says the benefits of this development for our community include much needed additional affordable housing and adding to the City’s assessment base.
Justin Marchand is the Executive Director of Ontario Aboriginal Housing Services says the development will benefit the community as a whole by being inclusive…

To that end, the Bawating Urban Indigenous Committee will be holding community consultations over the fall and winter to determine wants and needs to assist with the development.
