SAULT STE. MARIE, ON (October 19, 2020) – This Saturday, October 17th 2020 marked the 25th anniversary for United Steelworkers Local 2724, and they’ve chosen to celebrate by giving a gift back to our community – making a $25,000 donation to Sault Area Hospital Foundation.
While Local 2724 always planned to celebrate this milestone for their union, no one could have anticipated the COVID-19 pandemic. Seeing the need in our community for support, they chose to give a total of $100,000 split between more than a dozen local charities.
At Sault Area Hospital, their gift will be put toward ECG equipment used in cardiovascular stress testing. These tests help check blood flow through the heart, and allow our hospital to catch heart disease before it becomes a heart attack. Being able to offer these services locally has never been more important, in a time where travelling for healthcare can be more stressful than ever.
“We knew how important it would be to give back to our community this year, with everything that’s been going on,” said Rebecca McCracken, President of United Steelworkers Local 2724. “We’re so thrilled to continue our support of Sault Area Hospital with this gift. The staff at our hospital have been there for us, no matter what – we’re glad we could be there for them as we celebrate this important milestone for our union.”
With this gift, United Steelworkers Local 2724 have given a total of over $125,000 to Sault Area Hospital over the last 15 years – exemplifying their motto: “Steelworkers make great neighbours.”
“In this uncertain time, we are so grateful for the ongoing commitment of Local 2724 to give back to our community,” said Teresa Martone, Executive Director, Sault Area Hospital Foundation. “Catching heart disease early is critical to managing it well – and helps patients avoid complications down the road that could require out-of-town travel for more complex care. This gift will ensure that so many in our community can receive the care they need, close to home.”
On behalf of the Sault Area Hospital Foundation Board of Directors, Executive Director and Staff, we would like to thank United Steelworkers Local 2724 and their members for helping to make outstanding care possible at Sault Area Hospital.
